Pear Crumble (or is it a crisp?)

This pear crumble is everything that you could ask for and more in a dessert. It’s warm and inviting and bursting with flavor.

One of my favorite (that I often forget about) desserts is a crumble. There is something so warm and inviting about them. It doesn’t matter what fruit you use, they ALWAYS turn out amazing. I love, love, love a good peach crisp and have made (and devoured) an apple crisp, too. Now that we’re in prime pear season, I thought it would be fun to try my hand with a pear crumble (or is it a crisp?!).

I have to say that I was a little dubious about the pear at first. BUT HOLY SMOKES was it good! I definitely made some audible groaning sounds when I took the first bite. Funnily enough, so did The Big Kid and The Husband.

The Little Kid wasn’t awake yet, so she didn’t get to weigh in.

Trust me when I say this dessert is good. As in, you’re going to want to eat the entire pan in one sitting good. I totally would have if my family didn’t get their spoons into the mix. (Damn them.)

So do yourself a favor this fall (and every other day in between) and stock up on pears. And as soon as they are ripe, make yourself a batch of this pear crumble.

    You’re welcome.

    Ingredients

    • 4 pears peeled, cored and cubed (~4 cups)
    • 2 tbsp sugar
    • 1/2 tsp citric acid or lemon juice
    • 1 tbsp gluten free flour

    For the crumble topping:

    • 1/2 cup gluten free flour
    • 1/2 cup gluten free rolled oats
    • 1/2 cup sugar
    • 1/4 tsp salt
    • 3 tbsp oil canola, sunflower, safflower
    • 2 tbsp water

    Instructions

    • Preheat oven to 350°F/180°C. Grease a 1.5 QT baking dish and set aside.
    • In a large bowl, combine cut pears, sugar, citric acid, and flour. Stir until pears are fully coated. Pour into baking dish.
    • In the same bowl, add in flour, oats, sugar, salt, oil, and water. Mix with a wooden spoon. The topping should be wet but still crumbly. Spread topping evenly over pears.
    • Transfer baking dish to oven and bake for 45-60 minutes or until topping has become crispy.
    • Remove from the oven and allow to cool for 10 minutes before serving. (Delicious with or without a dollop of (failsafe) vanilla ice cream.)
